medicating young minds

This weeks material about the young mind and how many things that can contribute to the child's development is so very fascinating. I think that they should wait to medicate a child until they reach teenager years or later because their brain is still developing and beginning to understand things between right and wrong. When they medicate too young they miss out on that development  they may even fall  behind other kids in school because it can change their moods and alter their thinking. The article this week had so many good points behind medicating young children sometimes it's just one of too much of a good thing kind of ideas or not enough and they can't control what they are doing. They have to have a happy medium with the help of a psychologist keeping an eye on how they behave on that certain medication to tell if this is actually working to help the condition or make it worse. It's amazing how much a kid can remember and how far back it was their brain is so very strong and just keeps developing and getting stronger until it's mature enough to make the right decisions. Sometimes we don't realize what kinds of decisions our kids are making, but it's because they don't know the difference between right and wrong yet. What they think they're doing is right when in fact it might not be. It comes with age wisdom and development that kids will learn the difference between right and wrong.

  1. I also enjoyed reading this weeks material and what I found shocking to me was that fact that doctors are not hesitant to prescribe young children really harsh drugs. I believe as a result of medicating to young children are robbed from the opportunity for their mind to grow and be able to determine right from wrong. I agree with you that children should reach an appropriate age to be taking any type of medication that will have an effect on the brain that at a young age is still developing.

  3. Very hot topic discussion this week, I predict it is because we all know or have dealt with someone that has A.D.D. I enjoyed reading the various material this week, found it pretty fascinating about the drugs we all consider so normally prescribed, are actually pretty hard core. I can see how it would affect a child’s brain development at such young ages. There has got to be better ways to deal with children with these disorders, just like we have special courses set up in school for learning disorders, I think there could be some sort of special learning class for the kids to learn to handle symptoms as they see them come on. We have so many resources, and so much more is being learned, why are we not attempting to try other options besides popping pills to our kids so quickly. I know firsthand that if you put the work into therapy it can work, you still may not have the calmest kid, but you can learn ways around medication.
